Case Study Assignment Dalia M. Frend Western New Mexico University Case Study Assignment Case and Client History Helen is 32-year old African American married female. She entered the emergency room at aabout 3 A.M. restrained by policemen. Helen was reported to have been partying at a bar when she gradually become louder and exceedingly wilder. She was seen standing on the bar’s table, talking excessively, and knocking over glasses. The bartender finally kicked her out where she proceeded to dance and sing in the streets. When the police tried to get Helen out of the road, she began to swear at the officers and would not budge. They had to handcuff her and force her into their police car. She was lying in her bed and seemed very quiet and withdrawn. Helen appeared very depressed during the interview stating a few times that she wants to die. She reported that she had felt this way before and that she has been feeling ups and downs before. “One minute you’re way up there, and the next minute you’re in the blackest hole you can imagine,” Helen had said. Helen claims that the ups and downs generally last a few weeks long in her case. She says that she is not hearing any voices or seeing any hallucinations. Helen reports that she is currently unemployed as she cannot hold down a job. She says that her down days lasts anywhere from a few days to a few weeks long. Long-term and short-term goals in treatment should be established and worked toward. Some long-term goals for Helen would include maintaining her treatment plan and recovery plan, alleviate mood symptoms, develop a healthy daily routine, and achieve controlled behavior. Some short term goals would be to learn more about the client’s personal history of behavior and mood changes, verbalize an acceptance of the sense of powerlessness and unmanageability from their disorder, educate the client on the disorder, take prescribed medications as directed, attend group sessions or meetings, identify and replace thoughts and behaviors that trigger their manic and depressive symptoms, implement CBT program, and help client and family members improve the quality of their lives (Perkinson, Bruce, & Jongsma, 2014, p.
