The decision to enter a profession that has the potential to affect hundreds of lives of children each year should not be taken lightly. I’m currently a student at San Joaquin Valley College, working towards becoming a certified medical assistant in which I have proficiency in typing skills and accomplished CPR and HIPAA certification. My passion is the medical field where I can assist the needs and services of others while being able to connect and create a comfortable environment for patients. On an interpersonal level, I excel as a conversationalist to personalize each interaction I encounter. I am Shayla Padgett, and I work for South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD). I have over nine years of experience in human services; seven of those years are in rehabilitation. For the past two years I have worked as an Assessment and Career Exploration Specialist and a Job Preparedness Instructor for SCVRD. Using a variety of assessment tools, I assist our clients establish a vocational objective that coincides with their individual interests and abilities. In addition to assessments, I instruct classes that cover a variety of soft skills that prepare clients for careers.
I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old to change my area of employment and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I realize the fact I was brought up by two dysfunctional, abusive parents in a chaotic home lead me to search out that same type of familiar relationship when I left home at the age of seventeen. In short, I married a domestic violence abuser and alcoholic when I was 19 years-old and had 5 children. Ten years into the marriage, when I had finally reached the end of my rope, a local police officer helped me to obtain a Protection from Abuse order and removed my husband from the home. The desire to want to become a nurse grew stronger once I started working as a Medical Assistant back in 2004. I had been introduced to so many departments I couldn’t decide which one I enjoyed the most. However, I can definitely say working in pediatrics was a bit scary for me. I was young with no kids and I felt awkward at times with other people’s kids, especially taking care of sick kids and be the stranger that had to gain their trust in a short amount of time to collect the information, I needed to help the Doctor do his or her job.
On Monday December 7, 2015 I was given the opportunity to interview a lovely lady who enjoys her job tremendously. Upon asking her the questions or prompts I found that this job like that of being a teacher can be a very rewarding and uplifting career. Although the path to this career will be a long and strenuous work load the final reward working with families about to lose a loved one will be fulfilling. In this career you must have a strong heart, being open to listening and putting your own feelings aside to help others.
I want to be a physician because I want people to grow old. At the age of 6, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with leukemia. By age 8, the disease claimed his life, robbing him of the opportunity to experience the privilege of growing old. Unfortunately, we live in a society of vanity. We see the process of aging and choose not to embrace it.
Personal Statement I come from a large family with relatives from a little ranch in Chihuahua, Mexico. Many of which have never made it past grade school. Mainly due to their mother, my grandma, she had fallen very ill. Due to her condition and lack of money my aunts and uncles dropped out of school to work and help pay for her medication and medical expenses. The older siblings had to take care of the younger siblings.
As a child, I would spend my weekends venturing into the art of potion-making. I would dress in an old apron and imagine myself as a scientist concocting “medicines” of lotions, soaps, and nail polishes for “pharmaceuticals.” I reflect back on this and realize that even in adolescence, I had a passion for science, but never would I have imagined that my future would hold college labs for the UCR Summer Research Program, which helped me officially decide that I wanted to enter medicine. During the summer of my junior year, young chemists and myself worked in the labs of four chemistry professors at UCR to aid graduate students with their research. As the Speaker of the House, you are an influential asset to the Michigan House of Representatives and a catalyst for change. I am writing you as an impassioned social work student graduating in April of 2018 who has made it her mission to advance social justice for all and advocate for human rights to be granted to all humans – born and unborn. My field placement for my final two semesters in the Bachelor of Social Work program at Grand Valley State University is at Dickinson Academy, a cultural center elementary school in southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. I have been able to apply what I have learned in course materials and in the classroom to the palpable situations our students and their families are facing.
Throughout my career as an educator, I have tried my best to leave a positive impact on as many students as possible. As a high school construction teacher, I am preparing young men and women to step into society and be productive citizens. I have come to a point in my professional career that I want to move to the next level which is administration. As an administrator on my campus, I can still do what I enjoy doing and that is helping kids achieve and reach their potential. An administrator told me a long time ago that it is all about the kids and getting to know them and forming a relationship.
Why did you choose that agency and the relevance for your future clients? Being an active duty military spouse, the military lifestyle has become a large part of my identity and I belong within the military community. Working for the Airman and Family Readiness Center as a Social Worker is very much a “calling” for me. When I was a new spouse without a support system, the stresses related to the military were much more than I ever imagined. Now that I am a seasoned spouse who will soon earn her MSW, I really want to be there for the new military members at the best of my abilities.
My passion for helping and supporting those whose economic and financial standings have hindered their growth in our society, has driven me towards social work. I feel I have exhausted every possible avenue in my current degree field. Mr. Hady was born and raised in Singapore who has lived in Bishan for the past 20 years with his family.
Social work is a career that I have recently become interested in pursuing. I spent many years with misconceptions concerning the sector. However, following three years of working close by these experts, I have picked up a more profound comprehension of the significance of the work. I am especially interested in working in child welfare along with terminally ill children. I have got to a stage in my career where I have started to search out instruction that will make me more efficient in creating plans and providing services for vulnerable people.
