All students have the possibility to learn and with the proper experience, they will focus. There are many different ways used to build respect and a positive rapport with students. One that has always work is helping the students feel comfortable with the environment. When the environment is positive and comfortable to the students, the student tends to worry less and be natural. Building a positive rapport is not easy and it takes time and dedication.
I whole-heartedly agree with Moran when she states that, “the absence of trust impedes effectiveness and progress” (99). People need to be able to rely on one another and feel that what they are saying has value. Also, teachers want to know that administrators are going to put into place the steps in order to reach a goal if that is what they say they are going to do. Finally, parents and students need to have trust in the system which is often difficult when the system has failed them in the past. Therefore, establishing and maintaining this trust in each other is paramount to running a successful student-centered school.
Every Resident Advisor (RA) answers the on-call phone with a bit of apprehension, but when the caller tells you that they are concerned that their friend may hurt herself physically, all your nerves stand on edge. Every dime I earn working at Reynolds Community College and every grant and scholarship I receive will go towards my passion of studying human behavior and applying everything I learn to bringing every community I can reach, a giant leap forward. After receiving my associates degree in Social a Science I decided to take a year off to work towards finding what it is that I really want to pursue. I have searched for that 'something ' that will keep me intrigued and awake all hours of the night without realizing it. I have eliminated the idea of simply working to make ends meet or finding a good job to support my family and "living" outside the 40+ hours of a weekday job. I am pursuing much more and I am confident that I have found a path leading me to wake up before my alarm clock sounds instead of praying for more time.
During adolescence, I sat in dilapidated classrooms without fully functional lighting and materials, and was taught by dispassionate teachers—I was even called stupid by an 8th grade teacher. This experience has not only prepared me, but also taught me that leadership and compassion is the way to get through to students, especially those who are having issues with comprehension and motivation. Even as an adult, I struggle to come to terms with the notion that I am squandered potential, and I am left, at an older age, to discover who I want to be and what mark I will leave on this Earth. Personal Statement I come from a large family with relatives from a little ranch in Chihuahua, Mexico. Many of which have never made it past grade school. Mainly due to their mother, my grandma, she had fallen very ill. Due to her condition and lack of money my aunts and uncles dropped out of school to work and help pay for her medication and medical expenses. The older siblings had to take care of the younger siblings.
Teachers have the power to determine whether their classroom will be a caring atmosphere or an authoritarian environment for the students. Teachers need to curb their ego and model empathy, positive attitude, and leadership skills. She believes that if teachers use positive attitudes when dealing with difficult students, the students will respect the teacher more; therefore, the students will have better behaviors. Showing empathy toward the students will result in the student feeling like someone understands them. Creating relationships with students helps them feel safe in their environment and comfortable talking to the teacher.
