I am pursuing an education in social work for many different reasons, but I will provide a couple of employment experiences which were strong influences for that decision. While employed at a middle and elementary school with children from Detroit in a special education classroom showed me societal populations that were vulnerable and oppressed. Also, employment at a substance abuse outpatient counseling center revealed another population of people that needed assistance to improve their life skills.

Client dealings have shown how to remain respectful and calm in all situations. I was the first contact to the clients when they called to make an appointment and they came into the office. Numerous clients called angrily because the courts required them to attend therapy sessions. Moreover, they would scream and curse when I had to fill out a form and ask them several questions. Consequently, I had to remain in composure explaining that the information they provide was confidential and would lead them to a therapist. This usually pleased them enough to set up an appointment. When the clients came into the office, I had to check them in. Some clients were irritated when they arrived, therefore speaking to them empathetically was important. The different situations that arose taught me how to display dignity and respect to the clients along with being sensitive to their values. Moreover, realizing the clients were struggling with problems gave me compassion. My experience at the counseling center gave me incite on my passion. The situation revealed that working in an outpatient counseling center would be exciting with various situations and people.
