Wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy and gluttony. These were decided as the seven deadly sins in the early stages of human civilization. Today their meanings are similar, but with different societal implications. Greedy banks are foreclosing on people’s houses; envious consumers are always striving for unnecessary upgrades, and app manufacturers are making lust as easy as a swipe to the right. Greed, Envy and Lust all impact modern society individually, but drawing a connection from one into the next makes their impact that much stronger.
In 2013 there were 1.36 million homes foreclosed on in the United States. Mortgage relief scams are preying on the desperate homeowners of this country. Promising the customers that they can reduce the homeowner’s loan, change the monthly payment, and even offer money back guarantees. Envy, or jealousy, is not just hatred for what others have, but also hatred for not having it ourselves. The American consumer’s unhappiness with what they already own is what drives this sinking economy. Why stick with the basic floor model, when it is so easy to upgrade to the deluxe model for three easy payments of only $29.99 (plus shipping and handling). So, when watching late night infomercials the ads for P90-X® come on, and it starts showing the success stories, you think, “I can have that body.” So the envious consumer purchases the program, and after ninety days, they do not have “that body” so they go back to watching infomercials and come across the Insanity® ads, and after listening to their success stories the envious think again, “I can have that body”.
