After/Post Assessment: Students do a QuickWrite for two minutes to answer one of the following prompts: 1. Using your student guide, expand upon one of the three main ideas from the paper with the information you gained during the Socratic Seminar 2. Elaborate upon at least two points made by your classmates during the discussion. 3. Describe how your viewpoint has changed during the seminar. 4. ELABORATE Science Focus (90 minutes) Whole class instruction on fermentation and its related processes is critical for students to have a complete picture of what is happening in the food cultures. Students should have comfortable, working prior knowledge of aerobic respiration. Of particular importance is the understanding that only glycolysis …show more content…
● Glycolysis can not proceed without a continual source of NAD+ to be reduced by the generation of electrons from splitting glucose. ● Without the small amount of ATP generated by glycolysis (2 net ATP) organisms would not have the ability to oxidize glucose which is the primary source of energy for most cells. ● In order to regenerate NAD+, pyruvate is reduced by NADH to form lactate (deprotonated lactic acid) and NAD+. This allows glycolysis to proceed. ● Once oxygen is available, lactic acid is oxidized by NAD+ to recreate pyruvate which can then proceed through pyruvate oxidation to form acetate to enter into Krebs and NADH which can move to the ETC for a series of redox reactions to create ATP through oxidative …show more content…
In the Elaborate stage of the 5E model of instruction, students should be able to make connections between the concepts learned in the Engage, Explore, and Explain strategies but also be able to apply this information in a new context. This stage provides students with the opportunity to extend their thinking. Using the four informational texts from the Explore stage and the overarching theme of medical benefits of fermented foods, students create a promotional magazine advertisement advocating for the use of fermentation. Explain to the students that each group will combine each advertisement and story to create a magazine who will featuring a special edition on fermented foods. The lesson is divided into multiple stages outlined below as a framework to guide students through the process. Part I should be completed in class. Parts II-IV can be given as a take home project. If this option is chosen designate about 30 mins during a class period to work on the project for questions and to note student
