The Third Plate by chef Dan Barber is a non-fiction book that examines agriculture, food, and sustainability, which he argues for a new way of thinking about America’s food system. Barber explores how our current system is unsustainable and unhealthy for American’s, and tries to find new ways to change the system by visiting several farms, restaurants, and high class chefs. Barber used a storytelling technique in his writing to convey his viewpoints and facts from a historical illustration, personal experiences, and modern day systems. In the opening part of The Third Plate, Barber tells a historic story about a farmer from Spain who created new ways to modify his wheat in a healthier and tastier way. This opening set a tone for the rest of the book by establishing his approach to exploring sustainable agriculture.
What is the significance of a notable event if it does not change a person’s life? The story, “In the Time of Butterflies” by Julia Alvarez portrays the Mirabal sisters as typical girls who grew up in the 1950’s and 60’s on their family farm in the Dominican Republic. The Mirabal sisters had the same hopes, dreams, insecurities, and aspirations of girls in their country, yet the path they each eventually chose for themselves lead them to revolutionary outcomes. Each girl possessed a unique personality and each girl called into civil disobedience came from a unique mindset. Despite and because of their varied experiences each sister chose to join the revolution when each of their most dominant core values were called upon or challenged.
An Edible History for Humanity was written by Tom Standage which emphasis the history of food and farming used by man throughout history. The progressive era was a time in the United States in which the objective was to make the country a better place to live in, the intentions of this period were to eliminate problems caused by immigration, industrialization and corruption in the government. Although the intentions were good many citizens were unhappy about the situations they were living in. During the Progressive era something that stuck out from the many problems the United States was dealing with was the food industry. The food industry before laws were passed was a complete disaster, the way food has been manufactured was so unsanitary it blew everyone's mind especially today when we have so many regulations.

According to Woodson (1933), “The oppressor…teaches the negro that he has no worth-while past, that his race has done nothing significant since the beginning of time, and that there is no evidence that he will achieve anything great. (page #”) In other words, Woodson implies that throughout history, negroes were deceived of their past and were wrongfully taught that they contributed nothing to society except for their role as slaves; more specifically their history was subjugated. The course, Introduction to African American Studies is designed to recover the subjugated history of African Americans. It is also formed to give an overview of the culture, race, racism, family, and other specific topics such as women and voting rights in America.
An Illinois Civil War soldier named Charles Wright Wills wrote in his diary, “I enjoy the tramping, the mud, the cold, and being tired, and everything mean there is about soldiering, except being hungry. That beats me to a fraction. If I could only go without eating three or four days at a time I would pass as a soldier, but bless me, missing a meal is worse than drawing a tooth.” The Civil War was fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America. It took place during April 12, 1861 through April 9, 1865.
Did you know that if you live in North America, chances are that you live on a site that was previously inhabited by indigenous people. Before the europeans got to this once abundantly beautiful country we call home, there were native people who took care of, and were part of the land. They ate the plants and animals, and vice versa. They were in harmony with the circle of life. The foods that they ate were abundant, sustainably harvested, and all of them had a significant role in all kinds of ceremonies, actions, and their way of life.

Through this food diary assignment, I have learned that I have a somewhat healthy diet, but it would be good for me to add some more nutritious foods to my diet. Hispanic and American Food Traditions The type of food that we eat is influenced by the countries and people that were once settled down in the land that we live on. I was born and raised in Ethiopia, a country in the east of Africa. Currently, I live in the United States of America. Growing up in a developing country, I witnessed health, environmental, and social problems endured by communities, and specifically that people were unevenly affected based on their literacy level and livelihood. For instance, many citizens lost their lives due to limited access to and expensive costs of medical care. Subsequently, I have noticed similar issues in the United States.
Until the 1980s, ethnic restaurants constituted 10 percent of all restaurants in the Netherlands (statistics, 1998). In the past decade, ethnic foods have become extensively available and increasingly popular in Dutch consumer food markets (Iqbal, 1996). However, there is a distinct fewness of information on the popularity and acceptance of Asian food. 1.2.2 Asian food trends in Rotterdam It cannot be denied that the Netherlands has experienced a huge change in daily eating habits compared to the past.
