This chapter will concentrate on the U.S. Special Operations Forces’ growing presence around the world, as nations are asking for military assistance and training. In 2015 alone, “special ops have been sent to a record 147 countries-75 percent of the nations on the planet. It’s a 145 percent increase from the days of George W. Bush.” The growth of radical Islamic insurgencies has been America’s main target in the campaign, while assisting foreign nations. The rise of insurgencies have killed and displaced millions around the world. Special Operations Forces have been recently sent to Syria, Iraq, Cameroon and Libya to prevent the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) from spreading into neighboring countries. SOF are getting heavily deployed to nations in Africa and the Middle East to fight insurgent groups like ISIS or Boko Haram. Politically many Americans were upset when President Obama began deploying SOF because he promised he would not put boots on the ground after pulling almost all conventional forces from Iraq and Afghanistan. However, the insurgency problem the world is facing is a completely different situation. The U.S. is only deploying a small number of SOF to train and advise foreign militaries with fighting insurgents encroaching on our allied nations. President Obama’s plan has gained more support over time due to the U.S. realizing it must intervene to stop insurgent groups from growing any larger and to prevent the possibility of another 9/11 from reoccurring. Additionally, if the U.S. does not get involved now there is a possibility of the insurgency problem becoming much worse, which could cause the U.S. to get involved in another large-scale war. SOF have shown success in their deployments as they have helped nations construct stronger militaries, recapture ISIS controlled cities, free innocent people, eliminate insurgent leadership and help local populations in need.
