St. Valentine’s History

When Valentine’s Day comes round every February 14th everyone hopes that they will be gifted with love if they haven’t already found true love. The thing I don’t like about this holiday is that is puts both men and women into stress. That eternal stress about how to make their significant other, partner, lover and so on know that they are loved and how much they are loved. I feel that if you know that you are loved and that you love in return you don’t have to make a big show of it. A passionate kiss and a sincere I love you should be enough.

For that we must look back over a thousand years and find a cleric whose name was Valentine. Just keep in mind that this is something that was pieced together but the actual reason for celebrating romance on February 14th is not really known. What we do have is a lot of different legends and a lot of creative guess work. Modern day St. Valentine’s celebrations come from Roman and ancient Christian traditions. One legend has it that there was an ancient Roman festival known as Lupercalis/Lupercalia which was a fertility festival that was celebrated on February 15th. Valentine’s Day has become a major holiday in the U.S. but as with other such holidays unfortunately it has become too commercialized. It seems that perhaps it is time to return to hand-made cards which really show a person that they come from the heart. Of course, there will be those who will say that you could create a card on the computer and if you can well by all means do so but at least it will show that you really care. If you still prefer to purchase your card from the store by all means do so but then perhaps add a poem which you have created yourself. I think that all the hearts and flowers and chocolates and candy in this world cannot replace a genuine and honest Valentine that comes from the very heart and soul of the giver and the words “I love
