In the story “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Werewolves”, we can see an obvious change in Claudette throughout the five stages of Lycanthropic Culture Shock. The five stages of Lycanthropic Culture Shock are the stages in which the girls who were raised by werewolves shift into more human-like culture. After every stage, we see that Claudette turns more like a human and drifts farther away from her past, wolf-like, culture. In stage one, we see that Claudette is still acting wolf-like. The text from stage 3 states, “We sang at the chapel annexed to the home every morning.” (239 Russell). The quote from stage 3 tells us that Claudette has advanced pretty quickly. In the quote it is said that the girls were singing. Before you sing, you need to know how to talk, so this means that Claudette knows how to speak the english language pretty well. Singing is a very complicated thing when you are just learning a new language and culture, especially when you came from a culture where didn’t actually sing notes and rhythms. In stage 4, we see some of the bad human traits in Claudette, like in this quote: “(Jeanette talking to Claudette) ‘Please. Help me to mop up Mirabella’s mess.’ I ignored her and continued down the hall.” “I was worried only about myself.” [Both quotes] (Russell 241). The first quote shows that Claudette doesn’t worry about what Jeanette is doing and thinks that she can handle herself. The second quote shows the selfish trait of humans. Claudette doesn’t want anything to do with Jeanette’s problems and only cares about herself and what is going on with her. Both quotes show the bad human characteristics, which are very advanced when switching to a new culture. In stage 5, Claudette and girls’ transformation is complete and they will be able to interact with the human species
