In the nonfiction book Stamped:Remix by Ibram X Kendi, adopted by Jason Reynolds, Abraham Lincoln has an entire chapter dedicated to his story, complications, and things he did. The book, unlike many other history books, shows him not just as a great antislavery person, but as someone who was against black voting and only wanted to get rid of slavery to help poor white people. Abraham Lincoln was often portrayed as the great emancipator, as one of the best presidents because of this, the books say the motive behind this was to end slavery and help slaves. Lincoln’s journey to the presidency is less talked about than his actions as president, most books only mentioning that he had to run twice before he won the second election. That is most of what people know, what Stamped:Remix tells us is the ways and platforms he used to win the election after losing the first time. Lincoln went up against Stephen Douglas in the 1858 Senate election while taking the side of the abolitionists, he got steamrolled in this election, but his running stirred up the political scene in the US, paving the way for a presidential campaign. After his failed senate campaign he started to preach that slavery needed to end, but said so in a way that would get the major voting groups on his side, “Lincoln started with a shift and started to preach that slavery needed to end–but not because of the human horror. Because if labor was free, what exactly would poor white people expect to do to make money? On one hand he wanted slavery gone. Black people like that. On the other hand, he didn’t think black people should necessarily have equal rights. Racists loved that. On the other hand, he argued that the end of slavery would bolster the poor white economy, which poor white people loved”(100-101). This quote from Stamped:Remix talks about how he went about getting some trust from the main voting groups, and eventually pledged to not challenge southern slavery and won the election.
