Star Wars is a 1977 American space film written and directed by George Lucas. It was released in May 25, 1977. It all starts with the Imperial Forces, from orders of Darth Vader holding Princess Leia hostage, in efforts to end the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, the captain of the Millennium Falcon, work together with the droid duo R2-D2 and C-3PO to rescue the princess Leia, help the Rebel Alliance, and regain freedom and justice to the Galaxy. In the opening scene of Star Wars, director George Lucas uses panning shots, long/low shots, and medium shots to display the introduction of what the movie is about.
In the opening scene it shows panning down to show the space and the planets in the background over the horizon. A small Rebel ship passes the camera as lasers shoot at it from behind. Then we see the Star Destroyer gliding into the view from on top of the screen and just keeps coming until it fills it. The stars seem to shine as the camera tilts down, slowly and showing the blue haze of the planet, its surface crossing off as far as the eye level can see. In the scene it shows how Darth Vader is seen upon a high pedestal. It makes Darth Vader look dominant. The scene also shows how much power Darth Vader has and is willing to do to get more. This shot is giving the illusion that Darth Vader is invinceable and can defeat anyone in his way. In the first scene when Princess Leia’s ship is being boarded, high key lighting is used as well when during the battle between the stormtroopers and the crew members defending the ship. We see Darth Vader entering the captured ship, it went from three-point lighting to natural lighting because of the ship’s bright interior lights.
