Can you fall in love with a fallen star? Loving someone means to care for them and to be brave for them. In Stardust by Neil Gaiman, Tristran shows that he cares for the star at various times throughout the story. In the novel love makes Tristran act more brave than he usually would, this is demonstrated through his love for Victoria, relationship with Yvaine, and his decisions near the end of his life.
One of the ways that love makes Tristran act more brave than usual is his love for Victoria. When the tree tells Tristran that Yvaine is in danger and that he should go save her, he does as the tree said because he loves Yvaine. Tristran rushes to go find and protect the star when the tree says to him, “There are forces that mean her harm, and worse than harm. you must find her and protect her” (Gaiman 142). Tristran becomes most worried for Yvaine when the tree used the word harm to explain the star's situation to Tristran, and that was When Tristran decides to be fearless and listen to the tree and go to save Yvaine regardless of the fact that it can be dangerous. At the time he is thinking of how much he cares for her and that he does not want her to get hurt. Since he is thinking about protecting Yvaine at the time and not thinking of himself, it shows how much Tristran really cares for Yvaine. Instead of Tristran leaving Yvaine he decides to go to the inn and save her from the witch to take her back to wall with him using the candle, all because he loved Yvaine. Tristran shows bravery once more for trying to save Yvaine from the witch, “”Now,” said Tristran, one hand gripping the star’s arm, the other holding his makeshift candle, “now, walk!” And he thrust his left hand into the fire.” (Gaiman 165).
