During the first semester, I enrolled in three courses (Social work practice with children, youth and families, social justice and human diversity and research method). I decided to take only three courses in the first semester in view of getting used to the US education system. As I already get along with the system during the first semester I now have enrolled in five courses excluding field practicum. Taking three courses has given me insight on how to meet professor’s expectations, respect assignment deadlines, balancing workload and time management. Almost all the courses have provided me with foundational knowledge, skills, and values required to be a professional social worker. This course helped me to professionally interact with conceptual clients of children, youth, and families with multiple social life difficulties. Engaging in such practice on some regular occasions taught me skills of professional counseling and integrating theories in the everyday life as Social Work practitioner. I am also glad learning the most current social work practices tools like Evidence-Based Practice which numerous organizations and practitioners adopted it as their main values. Evidence Based Practice employ the most effective and current research findings to support interventions and practice in social work. Social justice and human diversity were another eye-opening courses which I found educational in terms of understanding the diversity of a society and how to advocate for these group who often are deprived of their human, social, economic and political rights. This course has provoked a thought in my mind about how to assist people in my country who are under oppression and systematic discrimination. Having both academic and field advisor has helped me to turn in for help and guidance which greatly contributed to my academic achievement. Further, the support of international student advisors and director of the global program has made my personal and academic progress so smooth. The orientation schedule which was days long was something that the host university could have done differently. As an international student, I had to manage to attend the long orientation schedules, arranging school essentials and formulating for the actual class which was overwhelming.
Interacting with the other OSF grantee was a supportive experience for me. The grantees shared their academic and social experience which made my initial period easier. Associating with the OSF scholars has also created a sense of family and support system that I can reach out for guidance and socialization. I appreciate OSF initiative of helping connect incoming scholars with the former student which is worth maintaining for future
