Thank you for this great opportunity in applying for a scholarship award from the Osher Reentry Scholarship. As a non-traditional student, I, Angel Miraya, am currently a senior at Boise State University studying Elementary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics.
My inspiration in becoming an educator stems from the positive impact many of my teachers had on me during my formative years. As a child I was adopted, placed back into state care and bounced from home to home. During that difficult time, it was my teachers who provided me with the support I needed to become successful and ultimately enabled me to thrive academically. Through my experience working with students I have learned the importance of having in-depth knowledge and expertise in an educator’s area(s) of instruction. This knowledge will allow me to better understand what my students know, recognize their misconceptions and provide differentiated instruction to further their understanding.
I am determined to do exceedingly well while at Boise State and graduate with honors. Since returning to the university in January 2015, I have earned a 4.0 while completing 76 credits making the Dean’s List with Highest Honors for three consecutive semesters.
The most significant challenges I have faced as a reentry student are financial hardship and time management. Through the support of family and weekly planning, my spouse and I have been able to successfully manage our schedules. Finances however continue to be a burden. Being married to a fellow educator and me being unemployed to focus on completing my degree in a two and a half year time frame has considerably stretched our single household income. This places a great responsibility on my family to cut our monthly expenses to help cover the costs of my education. In addition, this next semester will require us to cover childcare costs for our youngest child while I am completing my internship and student teaching. To help alleviate this financial burden I have applied for scholarships to seek funding for my senior
