The steam engine was a great invention that appeared during the industrial revolution around 1698. There was many faults; including heat and fuel that was wasted. In 1712 Thomas Newcomen started to make improvements on the steam engine. James Watt later came along and started to attempt improvements on Newcomen's steam engine in the 1760's. It took Jame's Watt many years but by 1785 he had made the steam engine more efficient by using more heat and less fuel. Coal and iron were both crucial during this time, coal was used to power the steam engine and to make iron. The steam engine was used for mining, where engines pumped water from deep workings.
