Through 1750 to 1914 industry dramatically changed the economy and social classes. Beginning in the early 1750s many countries switched from a agricultural society to a more industry based society. The invention of the steam engine allowed for many changes to take place, steam was a reliable source of power for many machines that could produce more rapidly than human beings ever could. Steam power also had great uses in the field of transportation, steam powered trains allowed people to travel more distance in a day than the previous generation could in a lifetime. These great advances in technology caused a rapid expansion in urban areas causing people to move from rural areas in search of greater economic opportunity.

The steam engine went through a series of events that formed it into the successful invention it became. It started off as an initial design that was modified into an engine that powered factories wheels of mills, along with new ways of transportation. It was used in ships and railroads.
In 1801, the steam engine was invented by Thomas Savery. This was a very popular mode of transportation because it made transportation and travel more efficient. The steam engine made not only travel, but factory work quicker and more efficient. This more efficient work also reduced the amount of jobs needed in factories so the introduction of the steam engine caused job loss and dangerous working conditions. It also sparked the creation of the transcontinental railway which connected the east and west coasts.
