Stereotypes and misconceptions are a part of people’s daily lives, but that does not mean that giving a person a certain label tells the truth about their life or personality. Stereotypes are a form of grouping people based on their social interactions. They can start off with simple labels such as preps, loners, jocks, and nerds. Misconceptions are people's points of view or opinions. They do not go based on facts, they just speak their mind. Both stereotypes and misconceptions can be both positive or negative. Grouping people and giving them a negative viewpoint is not the correct thing to do. The misconceptions about being a single parent should not continue, being one does not make a person less successful than anyone else. Stereotypes categorize people based on a truth about themselves but most of the time are exaggerated. When stereotyping a person people assume that they are a certain way based on what group they are categorized in. A misconception is not used to discriminate or trigger anyone in a personal way. In About Men, Ehrlich explains a common misconceptions about cowboys, “To be ‘“tough’” on a ranch has nothing to do with conquest and displays of power. More often than not, circumstances- like the colt he’s riding or an unexpected blizzard- are overpowering him. It’s not toughness but ‘“toughing it out “‘ that counts.” Most misconceptions made of a certain group are mostly made because of how they portrayed the groups in movies etc. In About Men Ehrlich also states that cowboys are soft and gentle people despite the way they look.
