Rebecca Sewell TCTN 5600.01 Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching and Learning Book Report and Reflection Culturally and Linguistically and Linguistically Responsive Teaching and Learning by Sharroky Hollie is an excellent take on how to reach our students who are English Language Learners, from diverse cultures, and from different linguistic backgrounds. This book provides a plethora of ideas to incorporate into our classrooms to reach all our students as educators. This book is broken down into three main parts or ideas, understanding the mindset, building skillsets, and a personal recap by Mr. Hollie on what it means to be a culturally responsive teacher.
The Gallup-Purdue Index Report discovered that only 39% of the over 30,000 college graduates surveyed had experienced a number of elements of well-being as well as having felt engaged in their work (Great Lives 7). Some students will prioritize school more than their youth and that usually means they don’t socialize with the other students their age. Do the students that enjoy their youth have a disadvantage of getting accepted into the university of their dreams to those who focus solely on academics? Some students who choose to enjoy their childhood before going into high school do get accepted into the prestigious universities but they are labeled as “slackers” becausethey didn’t prioritize academics over a social life. That’s where the stereotype of the “overachievers” get rewarded by the admissions of the Ivy League Universities and the “slackers” settle for less, and it’s not necessarily like that.
During the class discussion, students will share their views on the issue happened in the University of Missouri and cultural issues related to racism. Some ELL students may come up with an idea that not all people of color are minorities, especially in other nations, so the media agencies should not depict as they are the minority for agitative purpose. This kind of practice will help ELL students to have their own voice on those issues, which means that they will be able to grasp that even students include themselves with no experience in the American culture can have their own voice. Growing up around social media and movies that contrast stereotypes frequently, it has become almost natural to presume a way about a group or individual without knowing one’s identity. Before interacting with those who attended a private school, my mind was entrenched to the assurance that those students were wealthy, preppy, and superior who wore the same uniform everyday, resembling everyone else. From kindergarten till seventh grade, I attend a small charter school called Sherman Thomas where uniforms were enforced. Being mistaken as a private school majority of the time, outsiders viewed me differently. Mrs. Napier, the principle felt as if all students wore the same attire, no judgement towards the less fortunate would take place.
