Paris Rosales Tash 10255 12/8/15 Reality TV Millions of people watch reality tv nowadays, it's a pretty unanimous agreement that Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, and Nicki Minaj are the current reigning queens of pop culture. however it’s a pretty divided opinion on if reality TV is a good thing or a bad thing. Is it influencing our society to be petty? Is it making society more accepting? no one knows for sure. In my personal opinion reality TV is a positive thing. it gives more visibility to people of color and people of all different shapes, sizes, and background. The Kardashian/Jenner family are a good example, they are very wealthy people of color (Armenian American) who have gained much visibility over the years. Say yes to the dress has earned itself many spin offs such as, Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta, Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids, Say Yes to the Dress: Big Bliss, Say Yes to the Dress: Randy Knows Best, Randy to the Rescue. This show gives visibility to brides and families of all shapes, colors, and sizes. Common themes; overwhelming advice of friends and family, the ability of the "perfect dress" to help a bride overcome personal difficulty, struggle with weight and body image concerns. Sometimes the bride will get upset with her family and friends, family especially mothers are known to tear down the bride’s self-esteem. And for some odd reason adults think it’s mostly teens watching reality tv when the average age for someone who watches reality TV is forty-seven. Many believe that reality TV is “rotting our minds” when really giving visibility to people of all different backgrounds is a positive thing and helps create a more accepting and open minded society. Many people hate Kim Kardashian because they don’t understand that she is a smart business woman, she capitalised on a leaked sex tape and is now worth eighty-five million dollars, due to her fame, Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce) has brought more attention to the transgender people and to the “T” in LGBT bringing this issue to light has had a very positive impact for the transgender folk, even though Caitlyn is oddly conservative for who she is a trans woman, Even the shows where it seems though all the stars do is fight it gives a visual example to what an unhealthy or even abusive relationship is, thus making it easier for people to recognise.
