Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED’s) are drugs which are used to alter or enhance ones athletic performance or physical capabilities. Some examples of PED’s are Anabolic Steroids and Human Growth Hormones. These drugs are currently illegal in almost all professional sports. Although a lack of substantial testing as resulted in the fact that they are still in wide consumption. The major issues with PED’s are there health effects and whether or not they are “fair” and give some athletes a greater advantage. Through my research I have discovered that there are Meany ways in which PED’s do not negatively effect the people who use them or the sports they compete in. If more of this type of research could take place then it is possible that we could discover drugs with the same effect as many of today’s PED’s but with less negative side effects. Most of the current legislation about PED’s was passed before much was knows about how PED’s effect the human body. This almost led to steroids being completely band from any use what so ever for sports or medical. This is because almost all the knowledge about steroids comes from the media who tends to focus on the negative side of steroids. If the ban were to be lifted a lot of new research could take place and possibly even fix the side effects that steroids now have (Denham, 2000). Meany of the argument apposing PED’s is that they have a negative effect on the health of the athletes who use them. These side effects can include heart disease liver damage and even some cancers. One of the problems with this is that many of these side effects are common in most prescription drugs used by people today. The other issues is that the health effects the athlete taking the drugs and no one else so it is ultimately their decision if they want to take that risk and we should not be trying to force our will on them (Dixon,
