There are many ways for this crime to occur in my store, from low level employees, to vendors, and all the way up to the store director or owner. The most obvious crime is embezzlement. Cashiers can easily steal cash from their registers or steal product from the shelves. I have witnessed two cashiers being fired and prosecuted for stealing well over $500. Employees who participate in this theft are caught quickly because the cash drawers are counted daily and incriminate themselves since they are stealing in front of camera. Employees who work at the customer service desk have a variety of crimes they could pick from. The easiest would be to steal from the lost and found. This product theft comes in many varieties. Employees can steal food to eat on their lunch breaks or take home with them. Those who work in the meat department or the deli and bakery can change the prices on the scales and ring up quality product for pennies. This has occurred during my time of employment. A woman in the deli was marking down fresh sliced meat to only ten cents a pound and purchasing it. She was quickly caught when inventory was done at the end of the week. I have also seen deli employees weigh in food from the hot bar as “cold” so other employees can purchase it with their EBT cards. The Pharmacist and pharmacy technicians also can commit crimes. They handle thousands of pills daily and it would be very easy to slip them in their pockets. Vendor theft is also very common in grocery stores and has happened in my store. Vendors bring product in our stores, which includes beer, soft drinks, assorted cookie and snack brands, and bread companies.
