As aforementioned, the theory has five assumptions/factors on learning and five principles. The concepts are Self-concept, Adult Learner Experience, Readiness to Learn, Orientation to Learning and Motivation to Learn. Self-concept involves the adult having an independent train of thought and the ability to direct their own learning. Maturity carries their mindset and personality from dependent to independent and self-directed. Adult Learner Experience speaks to adults having an increase in their resources of learning, which have developed from experience. Their life experiences act as a reservoir. A strength of this theory is that it is very self-directed and allows the adult learner to take control of their learning factors and environment. Specifically to the theory, the Adult learning theory is that it does not contribute to persons from different cultural backgrounds, which have no knowledge of what they are learning or teaching themselves. In addition to that, , this theory does not support persons who have a learning deficit and does not address the changes of the physical, cognitive and psychosocial characteristics of an adult learner that transforms from time to time. Use in today’s work environment Adult Learning Theory is use in different working environments today. In example, technology changes all the time and it is not enough time to learn it. However, adult learners have to study it on their own by trial and error. In addition, Adult Learning Theory is utilized in hospitals, schools and other business establishments that encourage adult learners to perform tasks on their own and not to rely on others (Jarvis, 1988).
