Stress is a mental or emotional strain that results from a difficult situation. There does exist a positive stress that people will purposely put on themselves to motivate themselves. However, for the duration of this paper I am referring to the negative kind that is unneeded and unwanted worry or strain.

Stress is heavily involved in many college students’ lives. This makes sense because it is so easy to encounter during our years in college which are like trying to juggle seven chainsaws that are on fire. In middle school, I walked by a classroom several times, and almost every time I noticed this one poster that said “Perfection is not attainable”. At first I thought this poster was confused because what is the point in stating that perfection is not attainable when it is simply a demotivator. I also believed that it was completely wrong because you could get 100 percent on a test and as such be perfect. Later on, I saw that it was only a small portion of the quote and the full quote read “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” This is the view on perfection we need to adopt in order to not be stressed. Viewing perfection as this allows us to accept the fact that we are not perfect and we never will be. We will make mistakes and we must accept them. Holding onto them is like holding onto a poison that slowly will rot us away because of all the stress that we will be in. This is the view that I have adopted the past few years and it has certainly made my life less stressful everywhere, but especially in school. Before I took on this view, I would not be happy if I ever received a grade lower than an “A” on an assignment or as a final grade. I still knew that what I got out of school was more important than some inaccurate letter that a teacher gave me that was intended to represent my knowledge on a particular subject. A life without uncertainty is boring. An example of this would be a baseball game. What fun would it be to already know exactly what happens compared to watching a close game and being on the edge of your seat since you do not know what will happen next. Another example of this would be many of the activities we have done in class, such as walks and yoga. We were all uncertain of what they would be like, and yet I one of the best parts of these activities to me was the uncertainty that came with them.
