An issue that Student Affairs profession is facing across the state is campus/major impaction. “Impaction is declared when a CSU or UC campus receives an excessive number of qualified students for their school but cannot adequately accommodate them with funding on hand”. ( “calstate.edu”, 2017) Therefore this issue is negatively affecting students because now the bar for admission is being raised at several campuses. And students who are not within the geographical area of the university they intend to transfer to will have to meet those higher standards to even have a chance of applying. First a need for advocacy at the state level from the student affairs profession with the intent of an increase in funding to help boost enrollment. Also offering more online classes to reduce the physical capacity and providing students with necessary courses to complete their four-year degrees. And lastly, collaborating with high schools to push and ensure that students takes more college preparatory classes to better prepare them for college but most importantly, help students avoid remediation in math and English.
The program that I will design is targeted towards formerly incarcerated Students. This program will aim to connect students with the resources and information that will help to increase those students' prospects of success. Additionally, assist them with the transition to university culture and the unique challenges that it entails. The program will consist of various assisting components to make their transition to the university as smooth as possible, therefore, providing peer counseling, academic advisement, financial assistance, supplemental instruction, and psychological counseling.
