In the book Buster and The Amazing Daisy written by Jessica Kingsley a story is told of a young girl by the name of Daisy White, who has autism, defeats her bullies and overcomes her fears with the help of a rabbit named Buster. Daisy has Asperger’s syndrome, a mild form of autism, this novel that is told by her point of view allows others to see what life is like through the eyes of a child with autism. Daisy seems to face challenges when she begins to attend a mainstreamed school, where she meets a girl by the name of Marissa who leads the pack of mean-spirited “bully-pops”. Then there is Cody who is bound to a wheelchair and a breathing machine all because of an accident and we can’t forget Buster, the classroom rabbit whom Daisy trains
Introduction In the movie “Big”, Tom Hanks plays a 12-year old child who turns into a grown man overnight and suddenly makes a career due to his unrestricted and childlike creative ideas (Telegraph, 2005). In spite of the exaggerated illustration, this notion of the naïve and unlimited imagination of children has widespread implications on the perception of creativity amongst scientists. Whilst Freud (1985) already assigned artistic individuals a form of behavioural disorder as they failed to suppress their puerile and playful instincts, Amabile (1982) argues that this inclination is inherited amongst most children and only driven out by social norms when growing up. Following this argument, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos recently stated that the
Although there are a few things I feel very strongly about I don 't think I would go to the extent of dying for the idea. If I did feel strongly about a topic I would definitely try to fight for the idea that I believed, but if death were to be brought to the table I would probably just back down unless I was 110% into the idea that my stance would do something good. In history, there have been plenty of people that died for their ideas. The first that comes to my mind would be Nathan Hale. The idea he fought for was the freedom of his country.
In executive function tests, that measure planning skills and cognitive flexibility, people with autism will usually show lower performance than the general population. For this test, females with autism did better than males. Additionally, the scientists found out that the relationship between stereotypic behavior and cognitive flexibility is quite strong, and this relationship is stronger in males than in females, which can be an explanation for the different performance. On the other hand, the sample with autism performed better in attention to detail tasks than siblings without autism, and males scored slightly better than females within the adolescents with autism.
Annotated Bibliography Goike, J. (2007, June 22), Autism from a Personal Perspective: A True Story of Beating the Odds and Winning, Retrieved from http://www.beachcenter.org/research/fullarticles/pdf/pbs19_blueprint_for_schoolwide_pbs8_07.pdf Jerimie Goike wrote his own life with autism. In the beginning he notes that he wants to dedicate the article to his parents who had never once given up and his deeply loved grandmother. He details a lot about how his family helps him to win the battle against autism. And right now he has a stable job as a telephone operator.
Thesis statement In this paper, I will be explaining what Autism is and what are the symptoms. I will also be explaining the treatment that is used to help with autism related symptoms and how proper oral care is needed in the autism community. What Is Autism ?
Personal attitudes towards people with a disability would have strongly influenced the town of Endora’s behaviour to Arnie. Music played in the film was soft and may have been used to make the audience feel sympathy towards Arnie because he has a disability. However, Hallstrom’s analysis of people with autism cannot be completely accurate as in the film it never recognises that people with autism are highly intelligent in the creative field. Recent studies are shown that the way people perceive creativity and people with autism should be reconsidered. The research article concludes that the authors found that “Autistic people tend to be superior to non-autistic people in many tasks that require processing large amounts of information, picking out details of objects or scenes, or detecting changes in the environment.”
Raymond Babbitt is a man with savant syndrome, a severe mental disability like Asperger’s yet with an extraordinary mathematical ability. This rare condition may occur with other developmental disabilities or nervous system injury or diseases. Maybe one in ten autistic patients has these remarkable abilities to a variety of degrees. ‘While J. Landon Down included 10 such cases in his original description of this interesting circumstance in 1887, and Kanner included some such cases in his first accounts of early infantile autism in 1943, the 1989 movie Rain Man made “autistic savant” a household term (Treffert,
Those on the Pride point of view for autism believes that ASD is something, as the name suggests, to be proud of. They are likely to be individuals with higher/higher functioning autism that can care for themselves independently. They are happy the way that they are and do not view autism as something to be ashamed of or that needs to be cured. The Cure point of view for autism believes that ASD is something, as the name suggests, to be cured. They are likely parents or caretaker of individuals with low/lower function autism who are not able to care for themselves independently.
The topic I read about was weather there is a relation between Autism and the vaccinations that those who have the disorder may have received. Autism is a brain disorder that normally shows by age three, people tend to have impaired communication and interpersonal skills along with so restricted or repetitive behavior. The two articles go over how a key ingredient in vaccines may cause this disorder, while the other aims to show how the relation is nothing more than a myth. The first article was on how autism is caused by vaccines, and is called “Deadly Immunity” by Robert E Kennedy Jr. One of the main points of this article was how one of the main ingredients called thimerosal and its main ingredient ethylmercury which was in most vaccines until the early 2000’s is the main cause for autism in child, because it’s a toxic chemical. There have been studies that have proven thimerosal accumulates in the brains of animals after they had been vaccinated, also even small amount of the ethylmercury can cause brain damage even years later.
Along with great numerical ability, some are gifted with great spatial skills. An example of a high-functioning autistic comes from a popular movie called Rain Man.
In the release of the DSM-5, autism and autism spectrum disorder fall under the same category to be diagnosed as ASD (What is). A person who has autism could have the signs and symptoms such as lack of interest with others, preoccupation with a specific topic of interest, a strong need for sameness and routines, sensory problems, uneven cognitive abilities etc. These symptoms and signs vary widely between every individual. Individuals with autism can share the same diagnosis but can be different when it comes to the abilities and behavioral tendencies. Ten percent of autistic people can have a special skill called a “savant” skill where they excel in areas such as mathematics, have feats of memory, and artistic and musical abilities (Autism).
Describe the three main cognitive theories of autism (i.e., Theory of Mind, Executive dysfunction, Weak Central Coherence) and evaluate how well they explain autistic symptoms. Autism was originally a term that was coined by Bleuler in his paper “Dementia praecox oder Grupper der Shizophrenien” published in 1911. In this paper the term was used to refer to a form of schizophrenia characterised by extreme isolation. The word autism originates from the Greek word ‘autos’ meaning self. Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that is characterised by challenges with communication, difficulty with social interactions and a likelihood to engage in repetitive behaviour.
Autism or Autistic Spectrum Disorders, is a well known disease with many distinct causes. According to the article, "Autism can Be an 'Advantage' Researchers say", autistic people tends to "...dismiss as an artifact of impaired communication. " Many people argue the fact whether autism is a disability or an advantage. The book the curious incident of the dog in the night-time, by mark haddon, also expresses this argument. I strongly believe autism is a disability because, autistics tends to lack communication and social skills, that are essential to survival.
What is autism? What makes autistic individuals different from others? What causes autism? There are hundreds of queries in folks' mind when it comes to this disorder. What is it actually?
