Substance abuse in America is a growing concern that knows not how to discriminate in any form from age, race or social standing and is costing a great deal to the people of this great nation. The taxpayers in every state are seeing a tax hike due to the need to build more jails to house offenders. Burglaries are at an all time high in America. People are so desperate to find a way to pay for their next “high” that they can only think about the substance and are blinded by the cost of obtaining it. Police reports that involves burglaries are more likely to have the reason the offender committed the crime is to find something to sell or trade to the person to pay for the substance they need to get the high they want. People are visiting someone and see a purse or wallet, they are more likely to pick it up because it is an easy way to get fast money and less work for them to have to try to find a source of income to pay for their habit. A lot of people that have a full blown habit can’t hold down a job so they resort to some sort of stealing. Domestic abuse is another price that we pay for substance abuse. Again, a lot of police reports involve some sort of substance abuse. Most of those reports involve drinking some sort of alcohol. Most people tend to think that men are more likely to abuse when drinking but there are also women that abuse as well. Alcohol being a depressant tends to bring out a tendency that is already within that person. Domestic abuse is never good but combined with some sort of substance and they can get very volatile. Sometimes the abuser doesn’t even remember a lot of what happened or what they done. When the abuser gets “sober” they tend to apologize and a lot of times are forgiven and the victim doesn’t blame the offender but the alcohol itself.
