Is Change Always Good? Change is an important part of any society. Within the last hundred years, the global society as well as the individual society of every nation has changed at a remarkable rate. In America, change is engrained into our society. Everyday new technologies, medicine, and ideas change the way we live our lives. Additionally, there are developing social norms that enter the mainstream culture constantly. A society’s culture is an ever evolving entity that reflects that society’s current morals and values. Cultural change enables societies to improve the quality of life for individuals within that society, because societies need change in order to grow. The Women’s Suffrage Movement succeeded after a long battle, and gave women the right to vote. The Civil Rights movement ended the segregation that originated after the Civil War. Both of these social movements changed American culture forever and also advanced the human rights of American citizens, regardless of gender or race. Although the Civil Rights Movement caused a lot of national tension and violence, it was able to start ending racism in American society. Pro-democracy movements in the politically communist country of China help give Chinese nationals more human and undeniable rights (Pearson). These demonstrations are aimed at the Chinese government and ask for more freedoms and liberties than they already have. For example, last year thousands of Hong Kong’s citizens marched in the streets to protest a new law that would have restricted their voting rights (Plucinska). The people of China are undergoing a cultural change from a communist government controlled society to a democratic society controlled by the people. Once the transition to full democracy, Chinese citizens will be able to enjoy a life of freedom, free from the control of their current government. Although a slow and difficult process, China’s cultural change once completed will improve the lives of millions of Chinese
