The majority of today’s shoppers do not think twice about what goes into creating their clothing. It is important now, more than ever, that consumers be aware of what they are purchasing. I am extremely vocal about sustainability and the importance of an individual’s actions and their effects on the planet. Conscious shopping is a topic I discuss often with peers. When I shop, I reflect on where my clothes came from and how they were made. Hackett argues that there are four specific fast fashion practices that enrage consumers greatly; those being, fit, quality, ethicality, and sustainability in the production of the garments. Over 200 people were interviewed for Hackett's research, and all agreed that current fashion is no longer the quality it used to be, forcing them to either sew their own clothing or purchase older, higher-quality items of clothing. These mass-production factories exploit their workers. The people who make these garments are working in sweatshops, sewing and cutting for countless hours, and being provided with less than a living wage (Hackett). Clothing is turned out at a rapid rate with workers vying to make as many pieces as possible in order to earn more money, thus creating the term fast fashion. Upon learning about these conditions, I don’t see how anyone could support industries capitalizing on their employees’ desperation. This is a deeply vexing system. In my eyes, it seems villainous to underpay manual labor and place workers below the product. Fast fashion shows no remorse for the people making its goods. Corporations that are thriving off of this cheap labor disgust me.
