On May 12, 2014, SLJ published a report that stated there was a dramatic drop in reading among teens. Common Sense Media conducted research that looked at children’s reading habits and the changes that have occurred because of technology. Changes from turning the pages of a book to using technology that offers multimedia experiences. Children use devices that can almost be considered toys. Older children, tweens, and teens are communicating in social media, texts, emails, tweets. A key finding from the report were that in adolescents the reading rates have dropped about 20% across the age ranges of 6-17 years. It is challenged because the story centers around two young girls, Liza and Annie, falling in love with each other. It also shows two adult female teachers that are in a relationship and live together. While the ending for the two teachers is not a very happy one, since they lose their jobs, Liza and Annie, end up finding their way back to each other after splitting due to the pressures of family and school. This book was first published in 1982, things were very different for the LGBT community. It is meant to teach sexual health, emotional health, relationships including puberty, pregnancy and sexual orientation to children ages 10 and up. It is the facts that all children and young adults should know. It has up-to-date information about AIDS prevention and birth control. With so many young adults thinking about or actually being sexually active, this book could provide information that they need but are afraid to ask. After all, it is about the “perfectly normal” occurrence of growing up. The book George by Alex Gino is about a young 4th grade boy named George, who dreams of being Melissa, the female name he has chosen for himself. The book was published in 2015 and I have not found any information that it has been banned or challenged yet, but I am sure that it will be. George knows that she is really a girl. This book is very contemporary, look at the media, “I Am Cait” with Caitlyn Jenner. This book could be just what a student that is struggling with their identity or have friends or sibling that are struggling with their identity
