A. I learned a lot of things while i watched the documentary on the MS-13s. They do a lot of things that i never knew people could do. There are so many members in this gang and everyone wants to be higher and higher up each day. A good term from our sociology book that i connected to the documentary was Competition. Competition in biology and sociology, is a contest between two or more organisms, animals, individuals, groups, etc., for territory, a niche, for a location of resources, for resources and goods, for mates, for prestige, for recognition, for awards, for group or social status, or for leadership.
The “Outsiders” made me think about the rules that groups give us are strongly founded on what they see as defiance. It made me think that some rules are given within a group are not remotely necessary and that we as a society are to blame for what is deemed as “socially acceptable”. Deviants may not even be actually deviants but that’s what they are labeled by society because they think, what the deviant did was wrong, which could be made up by what society thinks is okay behavior. The relation to this reading and the sociology course shows how society controls us and how they consider we should act. It reminded me of how society tells us as women that showing off our body parts is deemed as trashy and not lady like, but men can do so without
Forrest Gump takes place in modern history of the United States, emphasizing race relations between blacks and whites, disability and southern culture. Beginning in the south during the 1950’s, the movie highlights segregation, and ends with the way African-Americans are portrayed today. Forrest Gump begins with the main character sitting at a bus stop, and it isn’t until Forrest speaks that the audience realizes he has a disability. Throughout the movie Forrest is portrayed as a simple, white southern male from Alabama who has a below average intelligence. The movie takes places during a significant era between the 1950 's and 1980’s, and recalls different events of Forrest’s life, underlining how he surpasses the expectations society had for him.
Society is influenced by everything. Whether it be the place people live, crime and law, family structure, famous people, social stratification and the biggest problem race. The movie A Time To Kill is a perfect example of all of these things. All of these items shape people and shape how they will live their lives. Sociology is the development, structure, and functioning of human society.
Chapter one is a chapter which delves into the basics of sociology. It defines sociology as a critical study of the social. Throughout the book it often defines sociology in more specific ways, including “Setting out to show the patterns and processes by which society shapes us”. C. Wright Mills suggested that we must use our ‘sociological imagination” in order to exercise critical thinking about the social world that surrounds us. By using our imagination, we are learning how to challenge societal norms and question everything.
There are several weaknesses in C. Wright Mills' argument on the importance of the sociological imagination in sociology. One of the main weaknesses is that it can be difficult for individuals to develop a sociological imagination, especially those who have not been exposed to sociological concepts and ideas. It requires an individual to have a certain level of education and understanding of the society they live in. Another weakness is that Mills' argument on the importance of the sociological imagination can be seen as overly optimistic, as it suggests that by developing the sociological imagination, individuals can easily understand and change societal issues.
Chapter 4 of Essential of Sociology: A Down-to-Earth Approach by James M. Henslin is about both social structure and social interaction, which are performed at different levels of analysis. Macrosociology, used by functionalists and conflict theorists, focuses on broad features of society, such as the relationships of groups to one another and social structure. Microsociology focuses on social interaction, and it is typically used by symbolic interactionists. According to the Dictionary, Sociology is defined as the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society. This means that people are willing to study social problems throughout the world and the society that they live in. In my life, I deal with my social class, Gender, Race, Religion, and the time I was born. Because of who I am, I definitely have been a part of a different upbringing and lifestyle that many sociologist may find interesting.
