Summary Of Beatrice Prior's Tris

In the beginning of the book the protagonist, Beatrice Prior “Tris” is being held hostage in a prison. Tris is divergent which is a category people are put into if their mind “moves in several different directions” and can’t be confined to one way of thinking or be controlled. The reason she’s in a jail cell is because she was caught as being a traitor and revealing secret information about the city from the previous book. Tris lies her way out of jail. Once she has escaped, a group approached her named Allegiant. The purpose of the group is to escape the city. Tobias is Tris’ boyfriend who is also divergent, and his mother made herself the ruler of the city after the war. Since most of the citizens are traitors anyways, Tobias turns against

Amar is Tobias’ former instructor who was believed killed for being Divergent. The two take the group to the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, where they meet Tori's brother George, who is also a Divergent thought to be dead. Then they learn the truth about their society. Along time ago, the government believed that people’s bad genes caused society’s problems. They made an attempt to create a better society by beginning to fix people's genes with harmful results. To fix its mistake, the government did experiments on the people across the remainder of the U.S in the hopes of raising enough Divergents to fix the 'genetic damage' left.
