In the final third of the novel Insurgent, a 525 page novel written by Veronica Roth, the reader is constantly in suspense wondering what events may occur next. Tris is injected with a serum that makes her feel as if she is on a bus with her mom. Jeanine is putting her through tests to better understand the brain of the Divergent in order to ultimately mind control everyone. When this serum is defeated by Tris, Jeanine brings her into a room with Tobias inside and injects an even worse serum into her that brings her to tears. To make matters worse, Jeanine then brings out the boy who gave away all of Tris’s private information. To her disbelief, Tris’s brother walks through the door. Later on, Tris is woken up by Tobias, who tells her they need to escape. Guns go off everywhere as Tris stops and realizes that she is in a simulation. She stabs herself and wakes up to Jeanine, who is furious. Tris attacks her viciously and is put back in her room. The next morning Tris is informed that her execution is moved to tomorrow and Jeanine will finish the tests on Tobias instead. When the next day arrives, Tris lays on the execution table, preparing for her death. The needle goes into her neck, and just when she thinks her life is coming to an end and her heart monitor goes silent, she is confused as to why she still feels alive. While Tris is still paralyzed Peter carries her to Tobias’s room to escape. After long hours of travelling and hiding, the three of them eventually arrive at the Abnegation faction, where they know they are safe. Once Tris has begun to settle down, Marcus starts a conversation with her that may be life changing. He tells her about the existence of a secret file that her parents were willing to die for. She is left contemplating between trusting her instincts and going with Marcus or following her boyfriend and his friends.
