Behavioral Disorder- Male Vignette
Looking at the case studies presented for this paper, this author took a closer look at the case study that focused on a thirteen-year-old Asian-American boy named Joe. Joe is currently enrolled as a ninth grader in a high school that is located in the inner parts of the metropolitan area. Since kindergarten, Joe has shown behavioral problems and it has increased in nature the older he gets. Joe’s teachers in elementary school, describe him as “immature and argumentative with authority figures” (Case Studies of Behavioral Disorders, 2018). Symptoms and signs of ODD can start as early as preschool and can negatively impact the child’s family, school, and social life. In Joe’s case, his behavioral issues started when he was in kindergarten, and progress worse and worse as he gets older. Joe is showing aggressive behaviors both verbal and physical with those around him. There is this misperception that oppositional defiant disorder is not a real disorder and that the child just need their parents to discipline better or to improve their parenting skills. Back in the day when a child showed behaviors of not listening, throwing tantrums, argues or fights a lot they were call a “brat” (Wedge, 2010). There will always be different opinions, views, and controversary surrounding mental illness and treatment, especially involving children. In this day and age, parents are criticized in everything they do with their child. If a child is diagnosed with ODD and they are trying to provide treatment and therapy for their child, they may be called bad parents, and they just need to raise their child better. However, if they didn’t seek help in changing or improving their child and their behavioral problems, those actions would be called into question as well and probably be called the same names as
