Once a community support system is in place, the second social issue, gang involvement and violence, can be addressed. As gang involvement and violence is a complex issue, the consensual approach is the best intervention strategy. “The consensus approach combines planning, community development, and community organization models and uses the strengths of each one depending on the situation. This contingency approach is flexible.” (Brueggemann, 2006) The flexibility of this intervention allows for members of the community to try one approach, regroup and try again, learning and adapting each new strategy depending on the responsiveness of the previous ones. There are several theoretical frameworks in which you are able utilize with working with a client, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. When working with defiant adolescents and their families the Family Systems is the best approach. The Family Systems theory is based upon the idea that individuals can be understood in terms of their relationships with the people in their family. Each member of the family as a role to play in the family system, and there are spoken and unspoken rules about the relationships and roles in the family. “The connectedness and reactivity make the functioning of family members interdependent. Appropriate termination is just as important as rapport building when first meeting the client. Abandonment or inappropriate termination can discredit all of the directions that you have provided the family and allow for digression from any positive progress that has been made. To terminate with the Alvarez family, it is important that individual termination and family termination take place. Each individual must be recognized and provided with continued directions towards successful completion of goals, additionally, the family unit must be met with to acknowledge progress and continued goal settings as current ones are met. Two statements that are to be made before termination are: “Although our sessions are coming to an end, I am confident that you have the tools to continue towards successfully completing your goals.” “Remember that you are important as an individual and as a family member. Your family is there to support you, but you must also be able to support your family by supporting yourself.” Questions that should be asked during termination include: “Are there any final services you would like referrals to?” “Do you feel confident that you have the tools to successfully complete your goals?” “What do you see as some of your most successful changes?” “What has the biggest impact in your life been as a result of the changes you have made?” “Do you have any concerns that you will no longer be meeting
