Caged No More by Molly Venzke, is an astonishing and eye opening novel about human sex trafficking. Aggie’s two granddaughters and both at risk of being sold by their father, Jack. Aggie meets a gracious and kind man, Wil, who helps Aggie rescue her two granddaughters from being sold to a trafficker. Throughout the novel, I learned three very important lessons, all of which I can apply to my life today.
Jack is a very cruel and disreputable man who is going to sell his two daughters, Skye and Elle, to a sex trafficker. The oldest daughter, Skye, has already been sold as a sex trafficker in Europe. Jack told Skye’s family that she was going to be studying, but lied so he could make money off of her. As Jack had promised, he is going to take Elle to “visit” her sister, but instead she is going to be sold to a sex trafficker just like her sister. Sex trafficking is becoming more and more frequent without most people even realizing it. According to “DoSomething.org”, there are about 20-30 million slaves in the world today. 30,000 of these people die every year from neglect, abuse, and torture (56 Interesting Facts). Human trafficking is the third largest crime industry, making 32 billion dollars every year (11 Facts). In the novel, Lottie recognizes a billboard for helping women who have been trafficked. “Trafficking Hope. Why does that sound familiar to me? Asked Lottie. You know all those billboards that are always up along I-10 that are about trafficking? These are the people that put them up… They’re pretty involved with what’s happening here in Louisiana” (Venzke 135).
