The article, “Can the Buzz around STEM Education Help Answer Agriculture’s Global Challenge?” Jessica M. Blythe discusses STEM in all school classrooms, but especially agriculture classrooms. In the agriculture industry, there is a unique situation. Agriculture production needs to increase to feed two more billion people by 2050. This needs to be done carefully as additional land cannot be used, so it is up to individuals with new and better ideas. Individuals already involved in the agriculture industry will work through this situation, but the future agriculturalists need to be prepared too. It is also blamed to be squandering the students’ creativity and artistic ideas. Individuals are concerned STEM is preparing students for careers that are not even created. For agriculture teachers, we do not need to be concerned about changing how or what we teach in the classroom. The focus should more be on the interactions with the other teachers and their classes or content. It is important to familiarize these teachers with the agriculture curriculum too. Many teachers do not realize that science has always and always will be a part of agriculture education. Students’ learning in all subject areas is important as they will be the future agriculturists and faced with even more challenging problems than feeding the ever increasing population on a limited amount of land. As I look to the future of teaching, it will be important that I remember these are the future individuals of the agriculture industry. I will need to foster the desire and drive students will need as they exit the classroom and either pursue more education or a career in agriculture. This could be done in various ways including modeling. I should model the drive and desire through my own work. Sometimes, it is really simple to tie other content to a topic. One example is using math when working with Punnett Squares through calculating fractions, ratios, and percents. Biology could connect as well discussing where the genes are located on the chromosomes and how many chromosomes each animal has compared to humans. This allows me not to have to change the material I am preparing to teach, but to include the other teachers to make sure I am aligning with their content or have the correct material. I can help those teachers that are willing to incorporate agriculture in to the classroom curriculum
