Catalyst to Abolition William Lloyd Garrison hoped for abolition and fought for rights. William Lloyd Garrison was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1805. Garrison’s father, Abijah Garrison, left and abandoned his family leaving Garrison’s mother to take care of her three children, “From this he developed a strong sense of compassion for the poor”(Bates 1). This shows that the family finances were critical and William had to beg for scraps just for him to have a meal. Being an abolitionist means opposing and fighting against slavery. “Garrison employed morality and religion as bases of power in the struggle against slavery”(Smith 1). This showed his methods and thought process for ending slavery. Early in his career, he got sued by a slave owner for defamation, making the person’s reputation look bad. He wrote an article about the slave owner participating in the slave trade, “Found guilty and unable to pay the fine, Garrison was jailed.”(Smith 2). He was unable to pay his fine due to his poor family background. After being released from jail he continued to stand strong and fight against pro-slavery, “A year later he organized the New England Anti-Slavery Society and played a leading role in organizing the American Anti-Slavery Society, which he was president of from 1843 until the end of the Civil War”(Smith 2). This showed his determination that he did not back down from being an abolitionist even after going to jail. His influence on the abolitionist movement had a great impact on the future.
