The title for valedictorian is heavily competition-based and a highly controversial topic in today’s modern society. In fact, many people argue for the continuation of the valedictorian title; however, others also contest for the cancellation of the title. Published by The New Yorker, in 2005, Margaret Talbot argues her stand on the debate of keeping the title for valedictorian in schools. Margaret Talbot’s “Best in Class” is an enticing and informational article about the argument on whether or not Valedictorians are a good thing. Having one valedictorian has been a tradition in schools for many, many years; however, as times change, students are becoming more invested and determined in school, so many kids are missing being valedictorian by 0.001%. Therefore, Talbot brings to light both sides of the story in this extraordinary article. Although Margaret seems to not choose a side, it is obvious through her strong diction and testimonies that she believes that appointing a single valedictorian is an unfair custom throughout U.S. schools.
The article, “How Higher Salaries Could Save the Teaching Profession” written by Cindy Long, shares why teachers should have higher salaries from the start and the impact it would have on the community. Long begins by including quotes from Florida teacher Seth Knolhoff, who shares how the lack of pay is affecting him and his family as well as what actions he might just be forced to take as a result. Long then goes on to share that Florida is having trouble keeping teachers or getting them in the first place because of the struggles to get raises each year since there is no guarantee, and also since there is no cost of living pay increase in place for Florida educators. The current grading system in the United States is very flawed. The teachers have to assign a letter to an individual, which could make that person feel inferior to someone who got an A instead of their B- or C. Due to this competitiveness, there has been an increase in stress in students, but this issue could possibly be solved if the student were assigned a pass or fail instead of a letter. If the grading system was modified, there would be a decrease in stress among students, grading would be easier on teachers, and it would replace an antiquated form of grading. The alphabetical grading scale has been in use since 1883; however, schooling has changed so much since then.
The NAGC Teacher Knowledge and Skills Standards Self Assessment was completed on October 24, 2016. After thoroughly reading the gifted education program standards, I identified three standards in which I have weaknesses and am interested in developing. Those standards are Standard 4 Instructional Strategies, Standard 7 Instructional Planning and Standard 8 Assessment. In reference to Standard 4, there are two areas that I am in interested in developing.
Indicators seven and eight talks about the teacher’s ability to assess, communicate, and provide feedback to the students. Communication is a very important thing to think about, especially with the lower grades. When the students were at the carpet area doing the little partner activity, the teacher was able to walk around the carpet area to listen to some of the conversations going on. She allowed her to listen to see if the students were understanding what was being taught. Before playing the game that went along with the lesson, the teacher made sure to go over what she expects from the students.
In Kurt Wiesenfeld’s article “Making the Grade”, he address the issue that students want a higher grade than they deserve. He goes on to prove this be by giving examples of previous students that he has had and what can happen when students get the grades that they want and not what they deserve. In Wiesenfeld’s article he states that about ten percent of students that take his class do not care about their grades until final grades are over. “You might groan and moan, but you accepted it as the outcome of your efforts or lack thereof,” Wiesenfeld stated.
Concept attainment is an inquiry-based instructional strategy that is suitable for teaching notions that have an open set of attributes. Concepts have a name, a definition, examples, and critical attributes or characteristics. They are also ideas or abstractions that are formed by putting data into observable categories (Lemlech, 2010). The primary point of this model is to allow students to create their own definitions and understanding.
There is a lot of controversy surrounding student evaluation of teaching (which will be referred to as SET for the remainder of this essay) concerning the capability of students to remain unbiased while performing them and the utilization of the information received. Many teachers distrust the information obtained and hold that the students are biased because of their grade received. Whereas, students often doubt that their feedback is taken seriously and may also be concerned that the responses they give will remain anonymous. Both are important areas for concern given that SET is intended to monitor the quality of education students are receiving by giving them a safe platform to voice their concerns when they have them.
Introduction During the course of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) this semester, I have been afforded the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of real-world organisation practices, their limitations, and the effects while providing recommendations backed by evidence and research. Should students be able to grade their teachers? Some students may say they don’t care how their teacher teaches, they’re there because they have to be. Some may say the teacher is the instructor they will teach how they want. Others, may say they care greatly about how a teacher teaches because they’re there to learn and that’s their future. I’m one of the ones who wants a good education and cares how a teacher teaches, considering I’m in nursing school.
Teachers are the life-blood of school districts across the United States. They are masters of their specific grade-level content and work tirelessly to manage the learning and well-being of their students. Teachers are the academic leaders of the learning environment within their classrooms and collaborate with their students throughout the year in order to facilitate learning, and foster creativity and problem solving. However, over the last thirty years, teacher leadership has taken on a whole new meaning.
An outstanding teacher is made up of 5 main things. They are respectful and in turn respected, goal-driven, have strong classroom management, have an inner drive to learn more and teach better, and have a love for each and every student. Each and every day a teacher must show the students they teach respect. If a student respects you, they will work just that bit hard for you. It makes a difference.
Being a teacher is a journey that has much to do with learning about yourself and being aware that what happens in your classroom reflects only on how are you with yourself. Teachers are not conscious that they project into students, and that affects how things go in the classroom. I believe the first characteristic of a good teacher is that he/ she is always willing to analyze his/her teaching performance. Second the teacher is humble enough to receive input about the development and application of techniques, learning from it and improving.
