“Is life in the army what Charley expected?” The book “ Soldier’s Heart” by Gary Paulsen features a fifteen year old boy by the name of Charley Goddard. His fantasy of war isn’t anywhere near the harsh reality the soldiers really have to live through. As the North begins to take the lead in the Civil War Charlie believes that he should join the Minnesota Volunteers because, ever since his father was killed by a fatal blow to the chest by a horse, he feels like he has to be the man of the house.
Jeff Bussey had no idea how brutal war really was, and he certainly found out the hard way in Rifles for Watie by Harold Keith. Jeff thinks being a soldier would be fun and adventurous. He learns how cruel and brutal war really is, but he also finds love along the way. Harold Keith mixes fact with his story, and not his story with his fact. Which is a good thing.

My favorite character in Harold Keith’s Rifles for Watie is Jeff, who is also the main character of the book. The book follows him in third-person which reveals the thoughts and character of Jeff. Jeff is a young man living during the Civil War who always wants to fight in war. When his family is raided by bushwhackers, he decides to sign up in the United States infantry. When he joins, he is put under the command of Captain Asa Clardy who hates Jeff and is looking for ways to punish him.

Throughout the story, Charley gradually changes due to the battles during the war, until, in the end he has Soldier’s Heart. Rifles for Watie written by Harold Keith is a novel that is prominently expressing unity after times of tragedy and war in a touching way that shows understanding. The topic and message of the novel is to show how war is a tragedy but you can always be understanding of the opposing side, as well as become united again. The authors topic can be shown through what is written in the novel and by the experiences of the main character Jeff. What else?? Although he learned that he had to learn to cope with every single physical, emotional and mental stress factor that came his way. He learned with every guy in his platoon, they all stuck together. This novel was a very well written book. Each story was different, and gave a different aspect on war every time. The emotions were real, and very descriptive.

Charley and Henry had to kill people in hand to hand combat, so these soldiers have gone through a lot in the war. The main characters in this book were both young, Henry was the legal age of 18 but he was still young, and Charley was only 16 when he signed up.
