When he finally gets to go off to fight in the Civil War he realizes that it is not at all what he thought it would be like. Rifles for watie is such a good book because th author, Harold Keith uses characters and dramatic scenes to turn historical facts into a story. Harold Keith did a very good job turning historical facts and events into a story. He did this through the main character, Jeff’s personal relationship with the people around him, including his future wife, Lucy.
