Twenge, the author looks at the effects both good and bad on the different generations taking a closer look at the generation born between 1995 and 2012. This essay was published in September 2017 in a magazine called The Atlantic which is an American magazine, more specifically from Boston, that debuts news, politics, culture, technology, and health. Its audience is most generally middle-aged and older Americans. Twenge had studied the subject of generations for 25 years prior to writing this article. This particular essay was an informative piece on how smartphones have affected a generation. She brought it to the attention of parents and grandparents alike that smartphones can and do in fact have a direct impact on the younger generations and did so through the use of facts and nostalgia. Jean M. Twenge spoke with teens themselves to also plead this case that smartphones have changed the ways of a generation as well as had an impact on the generation’s mental health. Perhaps after reading the article “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” parents will be more conscientious of how much screen time their children are having and how little time they are spending outdoors with their friends. Parents also may now realize that while there are negative effects from the use of smartphones there are many positive effects of smartphones for teens as well.
