The American Revolution marked the history of many heroic events that immaculately stand as true inspirations for the generations to come in the United States. Even today, the gallantry of a few soldiers that won independence for the country is not only kept in the hearts of the people but run in the American blood to demonstrate acts of valor at times of war and hardships. One such story recorded in the history dates back to 1776, about a sixteen-year old juvenile, Joseph Plumb Martin, joined the Rebel Infantry and recorded his tribulations about forty-seven years in a memoir titled as “A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier”. The book mainly focuses on the sufferings through the tough situation he went through.
In the poem called “On Papi” it said “Just because your father's present, doesn't mean he isn't absent” How she thinks and makes decisions is reflected in her connection with her father. When she’s getting punished by her mom, her dad just goes with it and doesn’t defend her. An example of this affecting her is in the poem “In Front of My Locker” when she says, “He’s not going to throw a punch. He’s not going to curse or throw a fit. He’s not going to do a damn thing.
Telling a story. It seems simple, does it not? It has a beginning, middle, and end. There is a set plot, probably some morals, and a few characters. The ending may not give you many answers, but there will be an ending.
A sixteen year old boy gives us a narrative through his memoirs of the revolutionary war in the United States of America in 1776. Joseph Plumb Martin, gives an account of his time in the army with a realistic view of the life, struggles and challenges of a typical soldier who had signed up for the war as a private and later sergeant. The war lasted for eight years, during which Martin participated in seven battles including the battle of White Plains; Kipp’s Bay; Redbank; Yorktown and spent the famous winter of 1777-1778 near Valley Forge. Having avoided being captured or wounded and his relatively good health during this time, the writer is able to account for almost the entire period. His narrative gives an insight to the real nature and daily routines of life during the war.

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien achieves the perfect balance between sharing truth, instilling empathy, and crafting engaging fiction. American author, Elliot Ackerman, asserts that different experiences or events can encapsulate “the war in miniature”.
In literature, a setting is a time, place, or social environment in which the action of a story takes place. In some cases, a setting may be even more important than the action of the story itself as it has the responsibility to evoke a mood and establish a world in which the characters exist. Settings also have the power to affirm traditional assumptions or to disrupt readers’ expectations. Both Ernest Hemingway and Tim O’Brien use their settings in “Soldier’s Home” and “How to Tell a True War Story” to distort readers’ expectations of the meaning of “home” and what it is like for soldiers to return after war. The contrasting settings of war and home in Hemingway and O’Brien’s short stories have the power to alter readers’ assumptions that
Tim O’Brien never lies. While we realise at the end of the book that Kiowa, Mitchell Sanders and Rat Kiley are all fictional characters, O’Brien is actually trying to tell us that there is a lot more truth hidden in these imagined characters than we think. This suggests that the experiences he went through were so traumatic, the only way to describe it was through the projection of fictional characters. O’Brien explores the relationship between war experiences and storytelling by blurring the lines between truth and fiction. While storytelling can change and shape a reader’s opinions and perspective, it might also be the closest in helping O’Brien cope with the complexity of war experiences, where the concepts like moral and immorality are being distorted.

She also writes describing her relationship with her father. Her only connection with the man was the songs that she remembered singing with him when she was five years old. These songs were the memories that created the image of the father she thought she knew.

I was so scared that they would figure out i was a Rosen and they would take me away and relocate me. They almost found out because of my hair and how i’m the only one with dark hair. But, the Johansens said that i was born with dark hair it just never fell out and came out blonde like most people.
The soldiers rejoiced at this during the hangings, drinking and laughing, as we watched the communist dogs be put to death. We drank the schnapps from local bars. German liquor is much better and more potent! We laughed as one soldier drew a picture of the spectacle. We had a Dührer in our midst.
Why Is Telling A True War Story Hard Lots of stories are hard to comprehend because they’re more brutal and traumatic for listeners, even the story-teller. In three stories: “The Man I Killed”, “How To Tell A True War Story”, and “Speaking of Courage”, Tim O’Brien showed how changing certain parts of a story and making them graceful, can make them easier to comprehend. However sometimes telling the story the way it was makes it brutal and gruesome, though some listeners prefer that over gracefulness.
