The article, IDEO’s Culture of Helping, states that their staff were assessed based on three characteristics, competence, trust, and accessibility, but both trust and accessibility to be by far the most important (Amabile, Fisher & Pillemer 2014). I would argue that personally my competence has also been stifled in professional environments due to me holding myself back from speaking freely due to potential feelings of judgement by others. Pfeffer defines this phenomenon as ‘self-handicapping’ in saying; People are often their own worst enemies, and not just in the arena of power. This is the case in part because people like to maintain a positive self-image. Paradoxically, one of the chief ways people preserve their self-esteem is by putting
