Conscious Capitalism is a book written from John Mackey’s point of view on how Conscious Capitalism helped his company become successful. The CEO shares key points on how an entrepreneur should be able to construct a business based on four tenets that will guarantee a long and successful business for years to come. It begins with the first tenet: Higher Purpose. When an entrepreneur creates a business, the reason they most likely created it is because there was a need for something. For Mackey, his purpose of creating Whole foods was to sell organic food for people who wanted to eat healthier. He knew his purpose from the beginning and never lost sight of his vision. For a company to have a great sense of purpose, it must also have four attributes in its DNA. This may probably be the most important tenet of them all, since stakeholders are the ones that keep the company alive. It is imperative that businesses maintain a strong relationship with all stakeholders, internal and external to succeed. Everyone will be satisfied at the end and it will be a win-win situation for both the company and all the stakeholders. I am going to leave it at that and continue to the last two tenets, which were the ones that caught my attention the most. When one sees a company with numbers that are off the charts, you can credit the conscious leaders for bringing that success to the table. Conscious leaders show traits of high integrity, servant leadership and great capacity for love and care. Without them, a company would not succeed as much as the shareholders would want to.
