These authors both have made equally noteworthy points to their
arguments. Barber makes several significant points to his argument on the subject
that capitalism is overselling with the use of consumerism. Barber is aiming to
persuade his readers to appeal to his ethics on the topic of Capitalism. This is an
appeal to credibility and is named “ethos,” for this article has the means to convince
the audience to agree with the argument the author is making. Barber shows the
reader how insufficient capitalism is to the economy on realistic issues,
“consumerism needs this infantilism ethos because it favors laxity and leisure over

In each article, both
authors Barber and Bryson make credibility appeals in their article and make strong
cases for their arguments. Neither article is stronger than the other.
Between the two authors, they both posses similarities in their articles. In
the article “Overselling Capitalism with Consumerism” Barber explains his case how
capitalism uses consumerism to make a profit from the public and in the process
uses the tactic of manipulation in advertisements. Author Bill Bryson speaks of the
manipulation advertisements may contain in their message as well in his article
“The Hard sell: Advertising in America.” Bryson’s article has quite a few similarities
to Barber’s article as well; Bryson speaks his opinion through his article and
explains how advertising works and how it has grown to the market. Capitalism
