Calpurnia is a good mother figure. When Jem does not want to play with Scout anymore, Cal comforts her and says she can spend time with her. She keeps them clean and cares about them. Before Cal took them to her church she made them “soap all over twice and drew fresh water in the tub for every rinse” (Lee, 156). She even says “I don’t anyone sayin’ I don’t look after my children” (Lee, 157).

This will be explored in greater detail throughout this essay. In Chapter 1, the author describes Calpurnia from Scout’s point of view as harsh and unfair, but it is inferred that, because Scout is a small child whom Calpurnia is reprimanding, Calpurnia really does care what happens to the children and how they behave. Lee writes from Scout’s perspective, “ Our
Calpurnia is also a good mother figure for the children, because she can provide them with more culture and knowledge that they can use when they get older. When Scout, Jem, and Calpurnia went to church with Calpurnia, they learned valuable information about a community different than their own. Calpurnia was also very smart when there was a rabid dog. Because it was in the wrong season no one thought that it was true, but Calpurnia did and her never giving up saved people's lives. Lastly, Calpurnia teaches Scout and Jem that even though you know something does not mean you have to show it off all of the time and intimidate people.
The Crossing, written by Gary Paulsen. What are the various dangers Manny faces in day-to-day survival? Which does he consider especially threatening? Which ones would I consider especially threatening?
In the book “Jump Cut” by Ted Staunton, from chapters 12 to 18, a lot of information is released about the characters and along with the information, concepts and people that likely foreshadows events later in the plot. First, we find that Gloria Lorraine is a mother of three, something that even her grand-daughter AmberLea didn’t know! On page 70, Gloria says “‘I’ve had three children and I’ve been a terrible parent’” and AmberLea, who knows her own mother and her one aunt, says “Gramm, did you say you had three kids”. This means that Amberlea has one more aunt, and I can predict that she will affect the plot later in the story. Secondly, at a gas station, there are different men in a black Lincoln (car) and they were tracking Al by using

The story “Into the Gorge” by Ron Rash was my favorite story in the text. The story provided setting that sustained the mood of mystery. It started with narrating the story of Jesse’s aunt and her mysterious death. Then, the story took place in the woods. The description of how Jesse interacted with the land conveyed his relationship to his father.
Cal’s jealousy leads him to sacrifice his brother’s perfect image of their mother to cure his emotional wound. Furthermore, the twins went out hunting one day and Aron shoots a rabbit, but Cal claims that he shot it, and that they should both earn credit for it. The rabbit was clearly shot by Aron, but Caleb’s jealousy led him to say rather. Cal’s jealousy keeps him motivated by constantly wanting to be a better person than
In her essay, The Stunt Pilot, Annie Dillard uses the art of language to convey her appreciation for another art form: the motion of flight. When retelling her time up in the air with stunt pilot Dave Rahm, Dillard purposefully starts off with a plain description of Rahm with vague details as to remind her audience how the man himself was not important, but it was what he did that was beautiful. Dillard then juxtaposes her impressions of being in the air by mentioning how the plane’s “shaking swooping belly seemed to graze the snow” (Dillard 91). Not only does this particular sentence express the emotions felt during the unforgettable flight, its subtle use of imagery also allows readers to envision being high up in the air, yet seemingly
Zaccheus Watford Dr.Carey Book Review Under the Overpass Sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich, having nothing, and yet possessing everything (2 Corinthians 6:10). This bible verse best describes this book. The book Under the Overpass shows the view from the homeless person perspective. Under the Overpass also shows that we should appreciate what we have. We should take one second and cherish being able to have our needs met instead of drooling over the various unnecessary wants.
Then he realizes that he was not going to stay with his money when he die. At the end, he helped his employee with a monetary situation. Further, he went to his nephew’s Christmas dinner. Significantly, this novel helps people retrain the meaning of being humble and kind with others. Something that is very important about this novel is that it teaches a lesson of helping others, because you are not going to stay with your money when you die.
It is commonly believed that dreaming is the relationship between the conscious mind and the unconscious mind, for these allow people to act upon their true emotions. To analyze dreams, one must understand that each individual is different, thus, there are no strict outlines to follow. Consequently, to have a better grasp of the understanding of dreams, it is imperative to consider the larger context of an individual’s sense of self and her or his surroundings. As I analyze my dream journal, I have realized that my dreams are a reflection of my worries about the future.
