The marigolds symbolized her childhood and innocence, which were deeply treasured. Once Lizabeth destroyed the marigolds, she was no longer a child. In lines 134-137, she remarked, “For as I gazed at the immobile face with the sad, weary eyes, I gazed upon a kind of reality that is hidden to childhood. The witch was no longer a witch but only a broken old woman who had dared to create beauty in the midst of ugliness and sterility.” As a child, Lizabeth had childishly saw her as a witch who strangely wanted to grow beautiful marigolds during a terrible time, but she realized that Miss Lottie just wanted to create happiness for herself and anyone that happened to pass by and look at her marigolds.

Coming of age is shown by the two main characters in Marigolds by Eugenia Collier and Dead End by Rudolfo Anaya. In Marigolds, Lizabeth heard her parents having a conversation about how they are poor and the gender roles are being reversed when it comes to bringing in money for the family. Her father cries because he is embarrassed and this situation made Lizbeth mature.
I woke to the sound of Joey screaming “Lizabeth stop, please stop”. And when I came outside to see what all the commotion was about, it was too late Lizabeth already destroyed my marigolds. These marigolds that were orange and yellow and the only thing that made me run down house look beautiful. They meant so much to me because I got those from my husband Craig Lottie. Craig had a disability that leads to him passing away a couple of years after he bought me the marigolds and that is all I have to remember him.
The reason for characterization is because it expresses if one has feelings or they have a good relationship between each other. The time when Maddie had to decide whether to let Queenie jump from the plane or have her just land with her in the crash but Maddie had faith in her to land with the parachute. The theme that I found rather intriguing was how there was a fantasy vs. reality theme in the play. Whenever Blanche speaks, she is always speaking off of an illusion. The story she tells about the reason she ends up at Stella’s door is one of her illusions. Another one of her illusions is when she puts the paper shade over the bare light bulb because she does not want to be seen for who she really is. All of the lies that she tells Mitch are an illusion.
