Recently I read the book, “Prisoner of War”by Alan Gratz, and in my opinion it was a very good book. The book is a historical fiction and, was about a young American boy named Henry Forrest, who lies about his age to get into the military to escape his abusive father. The story takes place during the events of Pearl Harbor in WW2. He meets two friends when he gets stationed in the Philippines and they get attacked by Japanese forces and are soon forced to surrender. Henry and his friends get placed in a Japanese prisoner of war camp on a small island in the Philippines. They face many struggles such as starvation, little resources, beatings, and death of friends. My favorite character was a friend of Henry, Gunny. He was very kind and optimistic, he always seemed to know what to do.
I cannot relate to the struggles the characters had to face. The book is about war which is something that I, luckily, don’t have to live in. I can relate to some of what the characters feel. I’ve felt scared, angry, pessimistic, and hopeful, like the characters in the story, although not in the same situation. I cannot relate to the character’s situation, but I can relate to some of their feelings.

My favorite part of this book was when the Americans fought the Japanese at the beginning. It was very exciting and the words and details made me feel the fear the characters felt. The scene really placed me inside the book and it was very epic. I didn’t have a least favorite part because the story was all amazing and the story was very well written. The story was also very informational it showed how Americans on the Philippines were defeated and taken to camps during the events of Pearl Harbor. If I could change one thing in the book, it would would be the deaths of some of the
