In The Chosen by Chaim Potok large amounts of trust are displayed by Mr. Malter, Billy, and Reb Saunders. Mr. Malter gives his son, Reuven, many freedoms a parent otherwise would not. For instance he allowed his son to befriend a boy from a completely different section of their religion. Not only does he allow the friendship, but he strongly encouraged it. Billy, a young boy, who unluckily turned blind due to an accident places trust in everyone around him.
To choose or to be chosen; which is better? The gift of choice is something not bestowed upon everyone, and this is especially true for the main character of Chaim Potok’s The Chosen. The novel describes the life of two boys, Danny Saunders and Reuven Malter, one of which has been granted the freedom to choose his own destiny, and the other has already had his life mapped out since the day of his birth. Throughout his childhood and much of his adolescence, Danny struggled between the life he wants and the one chosen for him by his father, Reb Saunders, the rabbi a Hasidic congregation. As the eldest son of his family, Danny has been born into the position of the future rabbi of his temple, however, he yearns for something much different.
"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." These insightful words came from Henry David Thoreau. Wisdom sparkles throughout The Chosen, a novel written by Chaim Potok. The three major characters in the story, David Malter, Reb Saunders, and Reuven Malter each displayed wisdom in various ways. Although these three possess contrasting personal traits, they all opened up their eyes into things that the others ignore or they themselves have not noticed before.
In the video love was portrayed when Orion the owner of the company set a plan where his client Shakir the basketball legend would get accused of rape. Orion had done so out of love for his daughter, Cordelia. It was shown how Cordelia was pregnant with Shakirs child and Shakir had left her. As a result her father had set a plan. Love was also shown at the end of the video where Cordelia and Shakir had a chat.
In “The Choice Explosion” by David Brooks, the author describes the state of decision-making skills and how they have affected life in recent years, specifically in America. Brooks begins with a description of a social psychology experiment on Japanese and American college students and the decisions they wanted to make for themselves. The results showed that the American students wanted to decide in four times more areas than the Japanese students. Brooks then makes the conclusion that this is the result of American individualism; this individualism has provided more choice and control over everyday life. However, the author also points out that arriving at good outcomes is no easy task, even for qualified decision makers.
Throughout history, multiple religions have budded heads, such as Christians and Muslims. In the book “The Chosen,” by Chaim Potok, the Hasidic and Modern Orthodox people conflict with each other because of their different views of belief. The religion itself doesn’t conflict, but the people of the different religions do. Hasidic and Modern Orthodox are the two sects of the main characters which were divided off from the four sects of Judaism, which are, Reconstructions, Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox. Both religions are “types” of Jews; both of these are stricter than the “average Jew,” but Hasidism’s are considered the extreme.
In “Tyranny of Choice,” Barry Schwartz brings to the table the topic of choice. The common believe is more choices, equals more freedom. Under that assumption we are living in the best times then. Everything in the world has multiple options to choose from. The choices range from what type of gum you want, to the best life insurance policy for your family.
Love. A word that can impact your life when conflicting around two peoples feelings. Based on the information in Ms.Ackerman’s “Loves vocabulary” essay the nature of love is attractive to all divergent ideas. For instance, The
When I was given the list of books we had to choose from, the title of a particular book fascinated me. This title is “The Paradox of Choice” by Barry Schwartz. Upon reading this book, I can gladly say that it was a good choice, not the best, among other books I had the opportunity to choice from. Like the title hints, this book discusses the different scoops of choice, why we make them and how they impact us in the short and long run. Because I did not read other books on the list, I cannot definitely say that my choice was the best choice, fortunately my book provided the solution to this concern.
Love cannot be defined by one definition, as the word love can be comprised of four different types of feeling. The categories that love can be sorted into are Storge, Philia, Eros, and Agape. C.S Lewis, the author of “The Four Loves,” writes about these types of love and describes how each of them is different. I think using these four types of love is the best way to describe love because love is such a controversial topic, where every person’s opinion on the word can be correct but different at the same time.
As a romantic it is my job to find a way to define the word love by not only using stories and facts, but by also explaining what love is not, and what love is, and the results of both. First off, the word love has quite a history in which it relates to. The greek distinguish love in four forms of love: kinship or familiarity, friendship or platonic desire, sexual and/or romantic desire, and self-emptying or divine love (wikipedia). The dictionary says that love is an intense feeling of deep affection. That is the denotation, nobody
Fast forward a few years, and we’ve hit the stage of being totally in love with Taylor Swift’s new song Mean, and the Jonas Brothers. More material of a love. Moving into the present age, we’ve found ourselves at a time when “love” is looked at in the most typical of ways. An infatuation with another person. Down the line, love must mean something else, but for now, we’re stuck only knowing what we
Love is a very strong word; a powerful word. What is love? There are many different forms of what is called love. There are common terms for passionate love such as romantic love, infatuation, love sickness, or obsessive love. The one being calling attention to was romantic love, specifically my high school crush.
Love is one word which makes us all wonder whether it is the right thing to think upon, whether it is the right thing to dwell upon. Love is one word which we often fail to understand and under lame circumstances we often prompt ourselves to do things which we always resisted. I do not know what exactly is the definition of the word “love” but I feel it is feeling without any expectation of wanting anything from the receiver. Few days back I saw a bird splashing in water, early in morning.
To put on a single definition on love isn’t possible for me. Love is everything good, its kind, full of hope, light, and joy. Love is something I feel, something we should all receive, and something to give. For me, love is a deep desire to inflict joy and affection onto others, especially the ones I hold an emotional value with. I believe that all emotions derive from love or a lack of love.
