Love is a very strong word; a powerful word. What is love? There are many different forms of what is called love. There are common terms for passionate love such as romantic love, infatuation, love sickness, or obsessive love. The one being calling attention to was romantic love, specifically my high school crush. By using the Passionate Love Scale, created by Elaine Hatfield and Susan Sprecher, I was able to determine what type of love I had for my crush (passionate or companionate) and how much ‘love’ I had for her. In that same order listed previously, my love was passionate with a score of 87. Although I am a bit surprised by this, I understand why my love was considered passionate. It asked those real hard hitting questions, making the respondent think intensely about them. For example: “I feel happy when I am doing something to make ____ happy.” This question challenges the respondent to consider the similarities/differences between that significant other and among friends. If the respondent feel happy about making that significant other happy, this mean that he/she consider that person to be on the same tier of bliss as among friends. This leads to a more companionate love since the respondent is taking effort to make that special person smile. On the other hand, if the opposite were to happen and the respondent does not feel happy about it, that means he/she is in more of a passionate love stage. This means the respondent is less interested in of a more committed sense of a relationship such as mutual respect and affection, but not all cases are like this.
