“Dead or in Prison”, is an autobiography written and based on the life of George Duvall. Through trial and hardship that most couldn’t even fathom, Duvall is able to avoid the prophecy bestowed upon him by his uncle, “you’ll be dead or in prison by the time you’re 13”(Duvall vi). Duvall’s writing for anyone from young adults to the elderly. The language he used while writing the book is simple; though the reader must be mature enough to reflect on the hardships Duvall faced and understand that some of the language in the book reflects the time period. This story spans from 1982, when Duvall’s uncle tells him of how dim his future looks, to 1996, when Duvall wrote “his Angel” and letter, thanking her for the incredible impact she had on his life.

Wes Moore takes us back to his childhood growing up, and also introduces us to a character sharing the same name as him, and similarly, the same lifestyle. Both of the young men shared the absence of a father figure, living in poor neighborhoods, bad influences, and lack of education. While reading, we question “how?” and “why?”
While this novel is extraordinary in many different aspects the struggles that occur are far from personal, they are instead struggles that all humans deal with both internaly and physically and are represented by each of the characters in the story. Each character in this story represents two qualities that all human beings posses and by their actions and struggles they show the downfalls of those qualities. Amir represents selfishness and jealousy as shown by his cowardness and the way he deals with the struggles he encounters. From the very beginning Amir possesses a certain amount of resentment and jealousy towards Hassan because he receives more attention and warmth from Baba than he does.
Out of all types of conflict, those that exist between a person and himself can prove to be the toughest to overcome. This is because one can only rely on himself to solve the problem. In “The Life You Save May be Your Own” by Flannery O’Connor, the major conflicts resides within Mr. Shiftlet. This man vs. self conflict involves the struggle in which he tries to overcome his evil ways, but continues to fail in the shadows of his own selfishness. He attempts to undertake good deeds to help others such as the Craters with their house work and the wandering boy with advice, but continues to fall short even by the end of the story.
